Horsepulls: What, When, Where, Why?

Rain or shine, the pullers drive in with their dually pickups and horse trailers. Horses whinny, greeting each other, while the familiar guffaws and greetings echo between the teamsters and pull helpers. Although the history is a bit vague about how this family fun event got started, it is always well attended by those of us that love the sport. The best version is that in the early 1900's when farmers used horses for field work and other strength-needed chores, they began to "bet" their team was better than their neighbor's. Today, it is a global sport that is well organized with the most popular breed for horse-pulling being the Belgian Draft horse.
As an official member of the Horsepullers Association, I receive a letter in the spring with a schedule and membership dues of $30.00. The membership includes updated schedules, plus receiving a book of tickets to sell for the fundraiser in the fall. I am part of something that is fun, a tradition, and a time to renew "horsepulling friendships." Anyone can be a member!
